On 08 April 2021, Hamada Madi, former Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission, shared his views on the management of this unique geographical area with the students of the International Trade & Logistics programme.

Former Prime Minister of the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros and then Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission, Hamada Madi is an expert on the management of Indian Ocean security. He addressed several key topics related to the issues of the programme during this online conference :

  • Geography and history of the territory
  • Indian ocean security : influences, powers, competitions
  • New strategies: the new silk road VS the Indo Pacific
  • The IOC, a small organisation at the heart of major issues

The Indian Ocean accounts for 70% of the world's oil traffic and 30% of maritime trade. The Intergovernmental Commission of the Indian Ocean, which brings together five Member States, gives substance to regional solidarity through cooperation projects covering a wide range of sectors: preservation of ecosystems, sustainable management of natural resources, maritime safety, entrepreneurship, public health, renewable energy and culture.

This type of module illustrates the programme's learning-by-doing approach, which encourages the practical application of knowledge and regularly involves industry experts who share their experience and background.
