Organised by CESIT and the "Trusted AI" chair, the conference was spearheaded by Olivier Dupouët, Professor at KEDGE and Laurent Simon, University Professor at Bordeaux INP - LaBRI. They were joined by Jean-François Bonnefon, cognitive psychologist and Director of Research at CNRS.

"Cooperating with machines": a lecture by AI expert Jean-François Bonnefon

On March 18, 2024, at KEDGE Bordeaux campus, CESIT invited Jean-François Bonnefon, a renowned researcher and AI specialist, as part of the "Trusted AI" chair, to deliver a lecture on the topic of "Cooperating with machines".

Joined by Olivier Dupouët, MSc Data Analytics for Business director, and Laurent Simon, University Professor, Bordeaux INP - LaBRI, Jean-François Bonnefon shared insights from his research on the dynamics of trust in the relationship between humans and machines.

In a rapidly evolving world where machines, robots and AI are playing an increasingly important role,  researchers worlwide are looking into the future relationship of trust and cooperation between humans and AI.

Jean-François Bonnefon's research findings are obtained through the study of human-machine interactions during  games based on the relationship of trust between humans and machines.

The objective of this work is to identify strategies for enhancing cooperation between humans and machines.

The initial observation reveals that cooperation tends to be weaker when a game involves interaction between a machine and a human compared to when humans interact with each other directly. Attempts to "humanise" machines by adding features such as mouths or eyes do not enhance human-machine cooperation.

Similarly, implementing incentive systems based on reward and punishment fails to significantly improve cooperation between humans and machines. However, cooperation between humans and machines is notably enhanced when humans are able to demonstrate their cooperative behaviour with machines, thus signaling themselves as trustworthy partners to other humans.
