AIRBUS Challenge and KEDGE pedagogical excellence: An evident collaboration!

15/12/2020
Students from the MSc ITE (Innovation, Transformation and Entrepreneurship) and the MSC Design Thinking are supporting AIRBUS Helicopters by participating in their collaborative innovation platform to co-construct a digital factory.

AIRBUS Helicopters: continual self-reinvention.

AIRBUS Helicopters is a division of Airbus Group - the world leader in aeronautics. It employs nearly 20,000 people worldwide.
The helicopter market has been struggling in the past few years. The risks of disruption with the rise in power of drones, the collapse of oil prices and the health crisis had lead the entire sector to a standstill.

Today, like so many others, the aeronautics sector must reinvent itself.

The shared observation

The inability to respond quickly to changes in the environment has highlighted that some industries are lagging behind in their digital transition and in their understanding of the issues at stake in the digital revolution, which can be explained by :

  • Rigid hierarchical organisation and operating in siloes incompatible with the digital acceleration.
  • Limited potential for innovation when the company confines itself to its internal organisation.
  • External service providers who often have long and costly methodologies and are far removed from the problems of the territories.

The desire to keep our talents

The appeal of large groups to the younger generation of graduates is declining, in favour of entrepreneurship and the creation of start'ups. This reinforces the need to bring together the various skills in a collaborative spirit by calling on multiple talents, thus contributing to the economic dynamism of our regions.

The challenge: A platform for collaborative innovation

Airbus Helicopters, in the person of Christophe PRIOR, Digital Transformation Office leader, already sponsor of the 2021-2021 promotion of the MSc Innovation Transformation Entrepreneurship of KEDGE, expressed the need for a solution linking Large Groups and Startups, SMEs and Schools in the Southern Region in a spirit of partnership and collaborative ecosystem.

The objective is to shorten innovation cycles, reduce lead times and costs and increase ROI. By using the capacities of new innovative players and by cross-fertilising their knowledge, this platform will facilitate and accelerate the digital transformation of Airbus. This new entity could also be intended for other major regional or French groups (CMA CGM, NGE GC, SNCF...) wishing to exploit this tool.

Thanks to the concept of companionship, co-construction and collaborative intelligence, all talents are welcome: Start-ups, students from Grandes Ecoles or Universities, Associations, Research Laboratories, incubators...

The MSc Innovation, Transformation, Entrepreneurship was present, in the framework of the "fil rouge" case, the basis of its hybrid and experiential pedagogy, but also in the name of the links already established with AIRBUS.

The involvement of the MSc ITE

The ITE MSc case study: inductive pedagogy

The students work on a company issue throughout their studies (3 days/week) and the teachers lead and adapt their courses to the students' progress (2 days/week).

For the case study proposed by AIRBUS Helicopters, a team of students from the MSc ITE, also supported by the expertise of students from the MSC Design Thinking, is therefore responsible for designing this innovation platform. A first step will be taken in February 2021. The final deliverable is scheduled for June 2021.

This case study and the collaboration with an industry giant demonstrate the alignment of KEDGE's training content with the expectations of companies. It is a guarantee of excellence combined with strong employability.
