Exploring modern art: A study trip for Chinese students from the IMAD in the South of France

08/10/2024
Students from the Institute of Arts and Design Management (IMAD), co-founded by KEDGE and the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, recently embarked on an engaging study trip to the South of France, centred around the history of modern art on the French Riviera.

A journey through the works of the greatest modern artists

Their journey began along the iconic Promenade des Anglais, a symbol of the city with its famous blue chairs, designed by Charles Tordo in 1948. During their trip, the students visited the places that inspired the greatest modern painters and explored their works: Picasso in Vallauris and Antibes, Chagall and Matisse in Nice, Bonnard in Le Cannet, Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

Focus :   Maeght Foundation

The students visited the Maeght Foundation, the first French foundation dedicated to modern and contemporary art, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. They had the privilege of discovering the exhibition 'Bonnard-Matisse: A Friendship,' an evocative retrospective highlighting the intimate and artistic relationship between these two great masters. This exhibition transcends the traditional approach to art history by telling their story through the lens of the friendship that connected the Maeght family to the artists

Our students were deeply moved by the beauty of this place, where architecture harmoniously blends with nature and art. This experience will undoubtedly remain etched in their memories, further enhancing their understanding of the dialogue between these disciplines.

Learning through immersion

KEDGE Arts School provides all its students with an immersive pedagogy across all its programmes. Learning occurs beyond the formal confines of the classroom, involving participation in real-life situations. This experiential approach is driven by the interaction between the learner and the environment, blending meaning, emotions, reflection, and action, and is inspired by the works of Piaget, Dewey, Kolb, Coleman, and Vermesch.
