Webinar on 13 February 2025, hosted by Jiequan Hong: "Food Waste Mobile Application Archetypes and Applicability to Non-Western Contexts"

On 13 February 2025, Jiequan Hong, a PhD student at KEDGE, led a webinar on food waste applications titled "Food Waste Mobile Application Archetypes and Applicability to Non-Western Contexts."

Mobile applications designed to combat food waste have emerged as key tools in reducing waste, either by redistributing surplus food or by improving household food management. However, their development and implementation have been largely confined to Europe and North America, leaving out 80% of the global population. This includes China, which is increasingly contributing to global food waste.

The study aims to:

  • Review existing literature on FWMA (Food Waste Mobile Applications), distilling key archetypes based on business models, stakeholder involvement, and underlying value propositions.
  • Use the National Business Systems framework as a theoretical lens to assess the market potential of these FWMA archetypes in the Chinese context.

This research contributes to the emerging literature on FWMA by highlighting the diversity of business models underpinning these applications and providing insights into their potential for global expansion.
