The Indian Ocean accounts for 70% of the world's oil traffic and 30% of maritime trade. The Intergovernmental Commission of the Indian Ocean, which brings together five Member States, gives substance to regional solidarity through cooperation projects covering a wide range of sectors: preservation of ecosystems, sustainable management of natural resources, maritime safety, entrepreneurship, public health, renewable energy and culture.
