Students from KEDGE Wine School's MSc Wine & Spirits Management have just wrapped up a field trip in the stunning wine region of the Loire Valley. This immersive adventure provided them with a firsthand exploration of vineyards, a glimpse into unique viticultural practices, and the chance to sample exceptional wines, all under the guidance of esteemed industry professionals.

Educational objectives

The main aim of this module was to give MSc Wine & Spirits Management students a chance to get real-world experience in managing vineyards or distilleries. By venturing directly into the field and engaging with producers, students were able to deepen their understanding through hands-on experiences. This immersion offered them a comprehensive view of the diverse businesses and approaches within the wine sector. Exploring the Loire Valley, a region sometimes differing from Bordeaux, allowed students to broaden their understanding of these practices, thus enhancing their overall comprehension of the industry.

Delving into vineyard practices and viticulture

The journey, which took place from March 5th to 8th, kicked off with an exploration of the Vendée fiefs, where students had the opportunity to visit the Saint Nicolas estate. This estate, known for its commitment to biodynamic practices, welcomed students into its vineyard, unveiling the secrets of environmentally-conscious viticulture. They also delved into the captivating world of the Cointreau distillery, a true masterpiece of the distillation craft. The adventure continued with visits to the Saumur appellations, where students explored Domaine des Roches Neuves and Château Langlois. These visits provided insights into the nuances of cultivating dry chenin and cabernet franc, signature grape varieties of the region.

Explorating iconic appellations

The field trip then journeyed to the Chinon and Bourgueil appellations, immersing participants in the rich history and viticultural traditions of the region. At Domaine Grosbois, students learned about polyculture methods, while at Château de Minière and Domaine de la Chevalerie, they savored authentically crafted wines, showcasing the ancestral expertise of local winemakers. Finally, the journey concluded with a visit to Domaine Belargus, a renowned producer of dry and sweet wines in the Anjou and Coteaux-du-Layon appellations. This allowed students to appreciate the diversity and complexity of the region's wines while uncovering the secrets of their production.

More than a mere wine-focused outing, this field trip to the Loire Valley provided students with an immersive experience, brimming with discoveries and interactions with key figures in local viticulture. Like other experiential components of the programme, it sets the stage for further exploration and a deeper understanding of the captivating world of wine.
