Olympique de Marseille and the F1 Grand Prix F1 juries of the MSc Sport & Event Management

05/01/2021
This semester, students of the MSc International Sport & Event Management worked on 2 real cases which were exposed to professionals of the Olympique de Marseille and F1 Grand Prix.

As part of the "Commercial & Social Sponsorship and Operational Activations" course, students are trained in the formalisation of BtoB and BtoC commercial offers in the context of the sports events organisation. The challenge, which took place in the first semester of 2020/2021 year, aimed at creating personalised sponsorship offers based on activation and ticketing techniques.

Students' projects were evaluated by the jury who selected the 2 best submissions:

Team 1

Team 1's challenge was to propose a new sponsor for the Olympique de Marseille and then build an activation campaign. They chose a Senegalese tourism organisation as sponsor.

One of the main challenges was to ensure that both brands get the most out of this partnership. The aim was to promote Senegal as a tourist destination while improving OM's CSR image and strengthening the link between OM and Senegal. When Lionel Maltese and OM staff attended our presentation, we were seen as professionals rather than students. We learned to analyse and understand the problems that a professional club may encounter in terms of sponsorship and to propose relevant and innovative solutions.

Team 2

The second team worked on a strategy to activate sponsors for the French Formula 1 Grand Prix. They focused on one of the event's main partners, the Southern Region (institutional partner).

We proposed different activation actions around the region and its assets. This type of work is a perfect simulation of the marketing services of sports organisations but also of agencies. This real-life situation in front of industry professionals offers added value for Master 2 students, whose main objective is to join the job market in less than a year. It was also very enriching to have a positive feedback from the organisation of the French Formula 1 Grand Prix and to be able to exchange with them.
