Enriching your academic journey with a panel discussion
Organised as part of the KEDGE Master in Business Transformation for Sustainability, the panel discussion will focus on Global Trade in a Circular or Regenerative Economy: An Opportunity for Developing Countries.
A look into the global trade in a circular economy
Current global trade practices face growing criticism for exacerbating key challenges such as inequality, human rights violations, and environmental degradation. Sustainability-focused international agreements and public pressure are urging governments and companies to abandon harmful practices and transition to a circular or regenerative economy, aiming to decouple economic growth from resource consumption.
However, this transition presents a complex dilemma for developing countries. Many of these nations, heavily involved in global trade as suppliers of raw materials and agricultural goods, risk losing their economic foothold. Some experts view this shift as a potential threat, leading to economic decoupling. Others, however, see it as an opportunity for transformative development, supported by initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that foster regional trade.
The outcome will largely depend on the strategies of companies sourcing from or operating in developing countries.
At the same time, businesses in these regions must proactively build capabilities and strategies to create greater added value in emerging sectors.
Three leaders from prominent intergovernmental organisations will share their insights and engage in a discussion with the audience:
- Dr. Annalisa Primi, Head of the Economic Transformation and Development Division at the OECD Development Centre
- Prof. Dr. Piergiuseppe Fortunato, Economist at the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Adjunct Professor at the University of Neuchatel
- TBA, Senior Manager at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
An insighful day
