'Hub of Talents": Teaching Assistants scaling up student success

02/02/2022
This project was initiated during the lockdown and involves 3rd to 5th year students in welcoming and supporting new students in the first year at KEDGE.

ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT

As of 2021, former students of KEDGE generalist programmes are present with the teachers to help students with integration and acculturation to the overall programme. The "teaching assistants" are selected and trained to guide the new students during the first 2 semesters. They are appointed to a section of students with the prime purpose of providing an alternative perspective, a unique opportunity for first year students to develop their skills while receiving guidance and ongoing support.

A JOINT PROJECT BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

The teaching assistants are involved in marketing and accounting courses during the first year of KEDGE generalist programmes. They work in close collaboration with the professor to achieve the objectives set and ensure collective progress. Marketing and accounting are cross-curricular subjects, where intra-promotional collaboration enhances the learning and gives greater context to the material.

Teaching assistants can also be students' first contact for questions regarding student life, internships, studies in partner universities, and sometimes act as facilitators between teachers and students. They support both French and international students on the path to success.

“I wanted to help in the school and to support the newcomers. I first discovered my passion for marketing during my first year at Kedge and it seemed essential to transmit it. The Teaching Assistants project is a real opportunity for newcomers and provides additional support to the professors. We are expecting a larger number of teaching assistants next year to cover the new courses.”

RESULTS OF THE FIRST TEACHING ASSISTANT EXPERIENCE

Despite the unique context of the health crisis, the first class sponsored by teaching assistants showed improved results in the subject. This student-centred approach to teaching allowed students to work closely on projects, ask for help and receive much-needed peer support. The collaborative environment that the project created helped to maintain a connection during the lockdown while improving engagement with the new topic.

This system, which has been extended to all marketing courses for new students in the Bachelor, EBP, IBBA and Entrepreneurship programmes, will be renewed for the next classes in the years to come.
