Start of the academic year for the Chinese students from our Sino-French Institute of Art and Design Management (IMAD)

18/09/2023
KEDGE Arts School is welcoming 161 brilliant Chinese students from our Sino-French Institute of Arts and Design Management (IMAD) in France for a year. This institute was co-founded with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai (CAFA). This partnership, the only one of its kind in the world between an art school and a business school, has 850 students following a dual art and management course between China and France.

In France, they will meet many professors, artists, curators, directors and managers of art, culture and the creative industries. They will be working on the Seine destination, they will  regularly be visiting the Musée national des arts asiatiques - Guimet and all the major national museums, they will also be meeting artists and designers, and will be travelling all over France.

A first step towards the history of modern art: Chagall

Having just arrived from Shanghai, our Chinese students set off in the footsteps of the great #Chagall with the Atelier des Lumières' immersive exhibition "Chagall, Paris - New York". Paris was a place of experimentation for Chagall, while New York was a place of exile during the dark days of the war, followed by a source of inspiration for his work. Our students will be following in the artist's footsteps, rediscovering his works, the landscapes and light he loved so much next week in Nice at the Musée Chagall, and in St-Paul-de-Vence during a study trip dedicated to the painters' of modern art.

"In Paris, I visited neither academy nor teachers. I found them in the city itself, at every step, in everything". This is the spirit of our in situ educational work."

Bring me closer to you: meet Emmanuel Penouty, contemporary artist

To mark the start of their new academic year on our Paris campus, the students took part in an artistic performance entitled "Approche-toi de moi" ("Come closer to me"). Emmanuel Penouty, a contemporary artist, invited them to get closer and look at each other through a double pair of glasses. Encountering the other, opening up to other cultures by detaching oneself from one's own ethnocentrism (Montaigne), encountering the other and at the same time encountering oneself (Lévinas, Hegel).
After the gradual reopening of China post-covid in 2022, this is the beginning of the great return of the Chinese in France, and we are honoured to be part of this encounter with these elite students from the best Chinese art school.
